Biographical data on Juris Peteris Svenne:

Born in 1939 in Riga, Latvia, emigrated to Denmark in 1944 and to Canada in 1951. High school at Leaside High School, Toronto, graduated 1958. Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.), in Engineering Physics, University of Toronto, 1962. Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), 1965. Post-doctoral positions at M.I.T. (1965-66), Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen (1966-68), Queens University, Kingston ON (summer 1968), Institute de Physique Nulceaire, Orsay, France (1968-69).

First appointment at the University of Manitoba, as Assistant Professor, 1969. Full Professor, Physics Department since 1980. Associate Head of the Department of Physics, July 1, 1987 -- December 31, 1988. Associate Dean of Science, July 1, 1989 -- June 30, 1994. Acting Dean of Science, July 1 -- Dec. 31, 1991. Research/study leaves 1975-76 at Tuebingen, Germany and Oxford, England; 1984-85 at Padua, Italy; 1989 and 1994-95 at Winnipeg, TRIUMF (Vancouver) and Padua; July 1-Dec.31, 1999 at Winnipeg, Riga, Latvia, and Padua; Jan.1-June 30, 2002 at Padua. In November, 2001, elected foreign member of the Latvian Academy of Science. Retired June 30, 2004; appointed Senior Scholar from July 1, 2004. Senior Scholar appointment renewed in 2007 and 2010.
