During my 35-year academic career (1969-2004), I have been active in academic adminstration, at all levels, department, faculty, university and service to the community. Two of the heaviest administrative responsibilities came during my final year (2003-4) before retirement. I served as Chair of the Senate Planning and Priorities Committee (SPPC), which is probably the busiest committee of Senate. I was Chair of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for Congress 2004. This was a joint congress of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP), Canadian Astronomical Society, Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists, and Biophysical Society of Canada. It was the first time CAP held a joint congress with these three organizations, and only the second time the CAP congress was not held on a university campus, but at a downtown hotel. Congress 2004, held at the Delta hotel, downtown Winnipeg on June 13-16, 2004, was felt by many to be a very successful event. In our planning, we were expecting an attendance of 500, we had, in fact, 688 delegates to the meeting. The annual congress must make a profit for the CAP, we managed to return to CAP significantly more funds than anticipated. The scientific quality and diversity of content in this joint meeting was of a high level, and most delegates returned home satisfied with their experience from the meeting.
I have served on numerous committees at the departmental, faculty and university level since my arrival at the University of Manitoba. Most recent administrative duties include member of the Department's Curriculum Committee, Associate Head of the Department of Physics, 1987-88, Associate Dean of Science, 1989-94, member of the President's Task Force on Strategic Planning, 1997-98, and service on Senate and as Vice-Chair and Chair (2003-4) of the Senate Planning and Priorities Committee.
Service to the Physics Community include serving on the local organizing committee for the International Conference on Clustering Aspects of Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Reactions, Winnipeg, 1978, as co-chair of the local organizing committee for the 1991 Annual Congress of the CAP, in Winnipeg, and Chair, Local Organizing Committee for CAP 2004.
