Configuring Printers for Windows 2000 & Windows XP
Important - Our print server is not configured to provide you with the printer driver for each particular printer. Sooo, before you go any further, download the drivers in the table above for the printers you are using, and install them on your PC. Do NOT run any utilities, just install the drivers. When you configure your printer below, at some point Windows will ask you where the drivers are, at which point you use the "have disk" option.
Go into the Windows control panel, select add printers, select network printer, select the URL option, then enter the following URL into the space that let's you specify a printer URL - replace 'hp301' with the printer name you want from the table above if you want a printer other than the department one :
http://lprint.physics.umanitoba.ca:631/printers/hp301
You will be asked for the type of printer, click on "have disk", and browse to
where you installed those print drivers earlier.
Configuring Printers for Linux
Most of the linux systems are running CUPS, so no configuration is required for most situations. Just specify the name of the printer, for example 'lpr -P hp301' or 'lpq -P hp200c', and that should do it. The CUPS running on your linux box should know how to get to the printers automatically.
Important - HOW TO CANCEL print jobs
It's important to note that as soon as you print a job, you will NOT be able to cancel it from your PC, since there is an intermediate print server between your PC and the actual printers. That's why it's very important to go and visit the printer immediately upon you submitting a print job to make sure things are going well. Two of the printers have actual CANCEL JOB (orange) buttons. If you don't like what is printing, you can cancel the rest of the job using these buttons. The department printer and the color printer have these buttons. One is supposedly able to cancel via the printer web page links, but I have had problems making that work at this time.
